Objective: Students will learn the use of negative and positive space as a compositional element that creates interest and originality to a self portrait, while considering the power of a silhouette, the imagery this can contain and how one can express themselves through simplicity and complexity of a silhouette piece.

Artist to observe: Kara Walker

Requirements:

1. Using a partner and my projector, trace your silhouette onto a sheet of brown paper.
2. Now use your sketchbook. Think of 10 things that describe what's going on inside your head. Narrow it down to five that you think are the most important.
3. Then, create five mini drawings of those things. What is happening with you? What has been on your mind? Are things in color? Are they in black and white? Maybe one thing is in color. You choose. Then choose if you want to collage some, draw all of it, or do both. I'd encourage both.
4. Images of emphasis should be in color. Everything else is in black and white and one must use sharpie. Start drawing inside your silhouette.
5. Nothing should be in the negative space, meaning outside your silhouette.
